Leadership in Writing

Leadership is taking initiative to live according to your own definition of ethics and in such a way that others may observe your definition and possibly apply it to their own lives in some way or fashion. You can be a leader by simply being for as long as you live a life you want to see in others. Every day, we lead by example.

Date Masamune applied this definition of leadership in the way he led his campaigns and how he reacted according to events. In much the same way, we can apply this leadership to make an impact on other people. By simply being early to meetings, practicing chivalry, completing work, being professional, and so on, you can be an example to others so that they may apply your lifestyle to theirs. Here are three excerpts from three essays written on leadership. The first defines leadership, the second explains it according to Date's life, and the third wraps up how Date left a legacy with his leadership.

We define leadership as the ability to lead and influence others actions and thoughts for good as well as evil. What makes a leader stand out is their uncanny ability to influence people’s thoughts, actions and words. Our philosophy as leaders is everybody has their role and is part of the machine (or team).

Date was a respected territorial warlord in his time. At an early age, he assumed his father’s responsibilities of defending the territory and optimizing the lives of the people in the Date region. Date, however, had to earn his respect as a leader. In his early years, he had gained an enemy, the Ashina region. Already, he was enemies with the Hatakeyama whom had murdered Date’s father. Because of his father’s death, he waged war with the Hatakeyama, and the Hatakeyama allied with Ashina. Date lost battle after battle up until the war was nearly over whenever the opposing armies were forced to turn away because of attacks from other territories. Despite this surge of failure, Date didn’t give up. However, what is of greater importance is that he used his failures to build new strategies and to overall become a stronger person even in character. To him, failure wasn’t a stopping force; failure was a support, and this outlook affected his men in a positive way so that they could win the war. This has impacted military tactics, and his philosophy of never giving up is seen everywhere. Even during the American Revolutionary war, when things seemed hopeless, they kept fighting and began using new improved strategies to foil the British. Date’s influence is widespread.

If Date had never done the things he did, there is no way of knowing if how long Japan would have stayed a private country, keeping to itself alone and not trading with anyone. The outcome of World Wars one and two could have been affected, we may not have even had them. Some people may believe that Date lived too long ago to make an influence on us, but the influence is there, even if it is only a “what would happen” type influence, and it does affect us in some way or another.
